지난 일년을 돌아본다. 한 마디로 용감했다. 무식해서 용감했다. 책 한 권 제대로 읽지 못했다. 몇 페이지짜리 자료에 파묻혀 지냈다. 그래서 별로 쌓인 것이 없고, 깊이도 없었다. 그러다 보니 밖에서 부는 바람에 쉽게 흔들렸다. 그나마 뿌리까지 뽑히지 않은 게 천만다행이다.
이것 저것 생각은 많으나 실제로 이룬 것은 거의 없다. 약간은 있다 해도 성적이 별로다. 아직 세상을 잘 모르는 탓이다. 세상 보고 바뀌라고 소리쳐 보아야 아무런 소용이 없다. 내가 좀 더 현명해지는 길밖에 없다. 그러나 갈 길은 멀고 날은 이미 어두워 간다. 그래도 가기는 가야 한다. 달리 멈추어서 할 일도 없다.

An Investing Principles Checklist from Poor Charlie’s Almanack 찰리 멍거의 투자원리
Risk – All investment evaluations should begin by measuring risk, especially reputational
Incorporate an appropriate margin of safety
Avoid dealing with people of questionable character
Insist upon proper compensation for risk assumed
Always beware of inflation and interest rate exposures
Avoid big mistakes; shun permanent capital loss
위험 - 투자를 평가할 때는 그 속에 들어 있는 위험을 고려해야 한다.
- 적정한 안전마진을 설정해야 한다.
- 믿기 어려운 사람과는 거래를 하지 않는다.
- 위험한 투자라면 그것에 걸맞는 투자수익을 고집해야 한다.
- 언제나 인플레이션과 이자율의 위험을 조심해야 한다.
- 큰 실수를 해서는 안 된다.
Independence – “Only in fairy tales are emperors told they are naked”
Objectivity and rationality require independence of thought
Remember that just because other people agree or disagree with you doesn’t make you right or wrong – the only thing that matters is the correctness of your analysis and judgment
Mimicking the herd invites regression to the mean (merely average performance)
독립심 - 단지 동화에서만 누군가가 황제가 발가벗었다고 말해 준다.
- 객관성과 합리성은 사고의 독립성에 꼭 필요하다.
- 자산의 생각이 옳고 그른 것은 다른 사람의 동의가 아니라 바로 자신의 분석과 판단의 정확성에 따른 것이다.
- 다수를 따라 하면 평균적인 수익밖에 얻지 못한다.
Preparation – “The only way to win is to work, work, work, work, and hope to have a few insights”
Develop into a lifelong self-learner through voracious reading; cultivate curiosity and strive to become a little wiser every day
More important than the will to win is the will to prepare
Develop fluency in mental models from the major academic disciplines
If you want to get smart, the question you have to keep asking is “why, why, why?”
준비 - 이기는 유일한 길은 끊임없이 노력한 결과 약간의 통찰력을 얻기를 바라는 것이다.
- 일생 동안 여러 가지 종류의 책을 읽어라. 호기심을 잃지 말고 매일 조금씩 더 현명해지려고 노력해라.
- 중요한 것은 이기고 싶은 의지가 아니라 준비하는 마음이다.
- 중요한 학문적 원리들로 구성된 사고의 그물망(*정신적 판단 모형)을 만들어라.
- 현명해지고 싶으면 끝임없이 "왜"라는 질문을 던져라.
Intellectual humility – Acknowledging what you don’t know is the dawning of wisdom
Stay within a well-defined circle of competence
Identify and reconcile disconfirming evidence
Resist the craving for false precision, false certainties, etc.
Above all, never fool yourself, and remember that you are the easiest person to fool

지적 겸손 - 모른다는 것을 아는 것이 지혜의 시작이다.
- 자신이 잘 아는 분야에서 놀아라.
- 일치하지 않는 증거를 찾아내고 이를 잘 이용하라.
- 가짜 정확성과 가짜 확실성을 가지고 싶어하는 마음에 저항하라.
- 무엇보다도 절대로 자신을 속이지 마라. 가장 쉽게 속일 수 있는 대상이 바로 자기 자신이라는 것을 잊지 마라.

Analytic rigor – Use of the scientific method and effective checklists minimizes errors and omissions
Determine value apart from price; progress apart from activity; wealth apart from size
It is better to remember the obvious than to grasp the esoteric
Be a business analyst, not a market, macroeconomic, or security analyst
Consider totality of risk and effect; look always at potential second order and higher level impacts
Think forwards and backwards – Invert, always invert
분석적 엄격함 - 과학적 방법을 사용하고 효과적인 체크 리스트를 사용하면 실수와 오류를 최소로 줄일 수 있다.
- 가치를 가격과 구분하고, 활동과 진보를 구분하고, 크기와 부를 구분하라.
- 비법을 얻으려는 것보다 분명한 것을 기억하는 것이 더 좋다.
- 시장, 경제 그리고 증권 분석가가 아니라 기업 분석가가 돼라.
- 위험과 그 위험이 주는 영향 전체를 고려해라. 파생되어 나타날 수 있는 충격 그리고 더 큰 충격을 조심하라.
- 미래와 과거를 생각하라. 항상 역전을 생각하라.
Allocation – Proper allocation of capital is an investor’s number one job
Remember that highest and best use is always measured by the next best use (opportunity cost)
Good ideas are rare – when the odds are greatly in your favor, bet (allocate) heavily
Don’t “fall in love” with an investment – be situation-dependent and opportunity-driven
자본 배분 - 자본배분은 투자가가 해야 할 첫번째 일이다.
- 자본을 가장 잘 배분하려면 언제나 그 다음으로 가장 잘 배분할 수 방안(기회비용)을 기준으로 삼아라.
- 좋은 아이디어는 매우 드물다. 그런 기회가 나타나면 이 곳에 많은 자본을 배분하라.
- 하나의 투자에 너무 빠지지 마라. 상황에 따라 기회에 따라 움직여라.
Patience – Resist the natural human bias to act
“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world” (Einstein); never interrupt it unnecessarily
Avoid unnecessary transactional taxes and frictional costs; never take action for its own sake
Be alert for the arrival of luck
Enjoy the process along with the proceeds, because the process is where you live
인내 - 쉽게 행동하고 싶어하는 인간의 자연 욕망을 거부하라.
- 복리란 매우 중요하다(아인슈타인). 불필요하게 이를 방해하지 마라.
- 불필요한 거래로 세금이나 비용을 지불하지 마라. 행동을 위한 행동을 하지 마라.
- 행운이 찾아오면 조심하라.
- 과정을 즐겨라. 그것이 인생이다.
Decisiveness – When proper circumstances present themselves, act with decisiveness and conviction
Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful
Opportunity doesn’t come often, so seize it when it comes
Opportunity meeting the prepared mind; that’s the game
결단력 - 알맞은 상황이 주어지면 결단력과 확신을 가지로 행동하라.
- 다수가 욕심을 내면 조심하고, 다수가 두려워하면 욕심을 내라.
- 기회는 자주 오지 않는다. 그러므로 한 번 오면 크게 잡아라.

Change – Live with change and accept unremovable complexity
Recognize and adapt to the true nature of the world around you; don’t expect it to adapt to you
Continually challenge and willingly amend your “best-loved ideas”
Recognize reality even when you don’t like it – especially when you don’t like it
변화 - 변화와 같이 살고, 제거할 수 없는 복잡성에는 적응하라.
- 당신이 사는 세상의 속성을 인식하고 그것에 적응하라. 그것을 당신에게 맞추려고 하지 마라.
- 당신이 가장 아끼는 아이디어라도 끊임없이 도전하고, 기꺼이 수정하라.

Focus – Keep things simple and remember what you set out to do
Remember that reputation and integrity are your most valuable assets – and can be lost in a heartbeat
Guard against the effects of hubris (arrogance) and boredom
Don’t overlook the obvious by drowning in minutiae (the small details)
Be careful to exclude unneeded information or slop: “A small leak can sink a great ship”
Face your big troubles; don’t sweep them under the rug
집중 - 단순하게 만들어라. 그리고 당신이 처음 하려고 시작했던 것을 기억하라.
- 신뢰와 정직이 당신의 가장 중요한 자산이라는 것을 그리고 그것은 순식간에 사라질 수 있다는 것을 명심하라.
